Q&A with East-West Seed Chairman Ard Groot on Growth Strategy

interviews, Q&A
East-West Seed was founded in 1982 in a small farm in Lipa City, Batangas. The combination of European seed technology and expertise, and local experience in entrepreneurship and tropical climate farming led to the first market-oriented vegetable breeding company in Southeast Asia. Challenges still abound in the agriculture industry; to wit, lack of infrastructure on effective irrigation water distribution, dependence of farmers on toxic chemicals for pests and diseases control, chemical fertilizers which increases the acidity and eventual death of the soil, lack of knowledge in agronomic and farm management, inefficiencies of multiple channels, cold chain not linked properly, lack of access to inputs, and a much fewer number of the next generation who want to be farmers. Mr. Ard Groot, a seventh-generation seedsman rooted in the long history of…

How Supermarkets Can Survive the Online Future by Josiah Go

How Supermarkets Can Survive the Online Future by Josiah Go

Articles
Red ocean Many brick-and-mortar supermarkets are in the red ocean — a market space where stores are constantly fighting against each other to win existing customers. As they aspire to be the preferred store, they usually resort to launching price and promo deals in predictable intervals. Unfortunately, the transactional norm of offering lower prices will not be sustainable, unless they get bigger margins and manufacturer’s support funds similar to volume discounts of the larger supermarket chains. Store options are available for consumers: budget-conscious ones are smart enough to stick with two to three stores where they can get the best deal, and digital native millennials are looking for more than what traditional shops can offer. Online Options The entry of more and more online stores and delivery services, brought about…

Reach is not Influence by Josiah Go

Reach is not Influence by Josiah Go

Articles
Reach, in the context of online marketing, allows content to be seen by different people. But reach, which is actually the number of followers or ‘unique visitors’ in a given period, is not necessarily influence. When brands tap influencers who are not actual users of the product, the credibility of the influencer and trust for the brand are affected because it lacks authenticity. This is where advantage of reach can lead to a new marketing problem for the brand. In this day and age, it is so easy to know what an influencer actually uses; scrolling past their personal posts in social media reveals their true brand preferences. The goal of tapping influencers must be clear. Many brands want the reach of the influencers, but they forget that awareness can…

25 Years as a Marketing Author by Josiah Go

Unmet Needs: I saw an unmet need some 25 years ago - marketing students using foreign textbooks with examples they can hardly relate with, so I decided to launch my first marketing book, ‘Contemporary Marketing Strategy in the Philippine Setting’. Banking on Strengths: I was an unknown 30-year old author in 1992, but I had three credentials I could bank on: 1. My term as National President of the Philippine Marketing Association had just ended; 2. I was the Director for the Marketing Minor Program of the Ateneo de Manila University, and I had been teaching marketing part-time since 1990; 3. I was a successful marketing practitioner (RFM’s brand management for 3 years), and entrepreneur (7 years). Fortunately, I got helped by many people. Asking for Help: As a novice,…
